A playful and surreal meditation on the nature of Reality, Consciousness, and Subconsciousness, Mind_Detritus is the brainchild of Portland artist Aidan Head (real last name).

"Mind Detritus was just something I wrote on the cover of one of my sketchbooks years ago, but it quickly became the umbrella term under which all of my work seems to live. The term seemed to perfectly encapsulate my creative process: A stream of consciousness dump of all the jumbled idea fragments that are constantly churning beneath the surface.

As someone who spends the majority of their life in their head, I use art as a way to get out of my head for a moment. I can't think when I'm drawing which is a beautiful relief from my incessant mind."

The goal of this project is to transmute the contents of the artist's mind with minimal tampering, only gently guiding these bizarre and wild visions to a more cohesive a palatable state while taking care to preserve the authenticity of pure imagination. Striving for that perfect balance of control, and submission to the chaotic randomness of the subconscious mind and the universe at large.

Aidan typically uses acrylic, charcoal, wood, and clay to bring his imagination to life, with a recent interest in building his own frames. He engraves designs into them as a way to allow the artwork to bleed beyond the boundary of the frame in the same way that the creative process allows ideas to bleed beyond the boundary of your mind into physical reality.
