Wood, Acrylic, Gold Ink
18x24

This was the first piece I decided to do a custom frame for.

It features hand carved designs that are filled with gold ink. The wood was all salvaged from my job as a carpenter.

I remember being surprised at how expensive frames were the first time I bought one and thought I should probably just make my own.

I had a vision before I ever started of an ornate frame with geometric patterns carved into it. Something that would compliment the artwork within and allow it’s essence to bleed beyond the boundary of the frame.

As I sat down to design it, I realized how hard it was going to be to get the patterns to line up perfectly at the corners, so I measured it and started 3D modeling it on the computer to get a mathematically perfect ratio.

I then got busy marking it out, making stencils for the corners, testing finishes, carving it, painting it and filling the grooves with gold ink. It all took so much longer than I could have imagined but so worth it in the end.
